DIY Flocked Holiday Tree

Tis’ the season! It’s time to start thinking about (if you haven’t already) your holiday tree! This is my favorite time of year. I love all things Christmas and the decor that goes with it. Holiday decorations, no matter the color scheme, make a house feel like a home. BUT, those gorgeous holiday trees can come with a hefty price tag. I’m here to tell you, you don’t have to spend a fortune to have the perfect tree. Let’s get started!

Okay, let’s break it down..

Christmas trees can be pricey. What makes them pricey? Height, type, flocked, lights, no lights? There are so many options and the more options you choose, the more expensive it becomes. Well I say, DO IT YOURSELF. Yes, you read that right. DIY. I am not handy by any means but this was easy. First things first, start with the basic tree. Find the height you want and go for the least expensive. Here are a few examples…(more linked in pic above)

Next, do you want lights? For ease, I say get a pre-lit. Sometimes you can get them cheaper without lights, but sometimes they cost the same. I linked both options above. Here are some light options below…

Here’s the fun part..flocking it.

There are many brands of spray snow, I just happen to like this one. You can spray your tree as much or as little as you would like. You could also do heavy on the top and light on the bottom to make it look like a real snow fall. This is the key to making an artificial tree look good. In some cases, real. The worst tree looks 100x better with a little spray snow. I used 1/2 this can for my whole tree. Best part, vacuums up easy and doesn’t shed once it’s on the tree!

Next up.. Ornaments and Stems

The trick to filling in all the gaps with a cheaper tree is to use ornaments and stems. I do the stems first, filling in the biggest holes. I literally just push them into the tree. The holes that are left, I use bigger ornaments. I linked 6 inch bulbs for the bigger gaps, and then I buy a big container of 3 inch to finish off the tree.

Lastly, is what goes under the tree..

I use a tree collar under my fake tree (mine is the top, left one), and a skirt under our real tree. If you are DIY on a budget, my suggestion, and I did this last year before I invested in a tree collar, is to use a cheap blanket. They look great! Last year, I used a $5 white blanket under my tree and it looked amazing. So don’t get sucked into $80+ tree skirts.

Our tree last year with the blanket as a skirt.

I hope this gets you in the mood to deck the halls?! I also hope that if you feel like a big fancy tree is too expensive, that you”ll give this a go! If you do DIY holiday tree, send me a pic!
