Let's Get Organized!

New year, new you, new home. Out with the old, in with the…nothing! It’s time to clean out! I love this time of year. No, not for the weather..for the “new start”. Putting away all the holiday decor, leaves you with having to clean up after it and then you start to see ALL that needs to go! Time to purge and get organized. You’ll thank me later! Let’s get started!

First things first, PURGE. I have been following Simplified on Instagram, and they are doing a 30 day Simplicity challenge. Something small to do every day to help simplify your life. It’s genius really because thinking about doing your whole house, apartment, condo, ROOM, whatever, can be overwhelming! So doing one small thing a day is manageable. I’m following that and also taking on one project a week that I have been wanting to tackle.

Day 1: I walked around the house with a trash bag and threw away anything I didn’t need. Papers, cups, water bottles, random things. Then I took my donate bag and started filling it with clothes, sheets, blankets, coats, anything I didn’t want to look at anymore. I had blankets (that I wasn’t using) piled up in the laundry room. Why? Because I may use them someday?? BYE Felicia! Gone. Start with that and see how you feel. This should take 20 minutes top to do these two things.

Now that the house is cleaned out, it’s time to organize what’s left!

Cleaning out the fridge is my favorite. I know, call me crazy. With a family of 5 and everyone liking different things, the fridge gets full FAST. Every time I come home with more then 2 bags of food, I go through the fridge. It may seem time consuming, but if you do this at least once a week, it takes just a couple minutes. As I put things away I do inventory of what needs to go.

While I was purging, I went through the linen closet and got rid of all the old sheets and towels with no matches. I only kept full sheet sets, all pillow cases, 2 duvets, and 2 down comforters. We had an old electric blanket in there with no cord?? Gone. *TIP This may sound simple but it’s important… DO NOT buy any bins, baskets, containers, until you have gone through EVERYTHING. You don’t know what you need until you’ve purged and you may not need all the bins you order. Or, they may not be the right size for what you have left! You will end up with random containers and still not be organized.

Looking at these because they are all the same size AND have labels!

Love these baskets above but will need to totally finish and measure before I go for these.

The rest of the house will come by doing areas little by little. I set days/goals for myself, giving longer time for the bigger projects. Find a system that works for you to keep accountable. I always write everything down. I would forget EVERYTHING if I didn’t write it down. Do what works for you. I’m linking some other fun items below to help with organizing and refreshing your home! If you want to follow along on my journey to organize my home, I am documenting everything on Instagram! Do it with me!

I hope this helps you if you needed some direction in this new year, new decade to get started?! As always, if you have any questions or comments, leave them in the box below! Happy New Year!
