Sailing the BVI's

Sailing the BVI’s. Brian and I have been going to the Caribbean our entire lives and we finally came to the conclusion that our best times on those trips were out in the ocean or when we rented a boat for the day. We decided to try a Moorings vacation and it was the best decision we ever made.

Doing a lot of research of where to go, who to go with, we kept coming back to the same place. The Moorings Vacations are the most highly recommended company. They have a fleet that is spread all over the world. I will link their website at the end and to all the pictures. Hope you enjoy!

As a family of five, we settled on the Moorings 4500 (crewed) 4 cabin catamaran. Each cabin has it’s own bathroom. Brian and myself in one, my oldest in another, the two younger ones shared, and the 4th cabin was for the crew. The crew was a married couple; a captain and 1st mate/chef. They were incredible and made the trip worth it. Even if you have experience in sailing, I cannot recommend enough, having a crew. Too many things can go wrong and out in the middle of the ocean…well, we didn’t want the worry.

It was like the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles to get to Tortola. Once there, we checked into the Moorings Marina and Resort. We spent the night at the resort and had dinner and breakfast there. It was beautiful. They are almost completely rebuilt from hurricane Irma two years ago. The rest of Tortola (and the rest of the BVI’s for that matter) not so much. Rob and Becky came and found us at noon and took us and all our stuff to our home-away-from home for the next week. We were lucky enough to get a brand new 2019 catamaran and it was gorgeous. They brought all our stuff aboard, showed us to our cabins and then we went above deck for a safety briefing. This is where we were introduced to Captain Robs famous Pain Killers. They quickly became a fan favorite and we drank them every day, all day until we came back to port. Kids had virgin (obviously)…

We left the harbor and headed for our first stop. Little Harbour was a cove that was calm, clear, and where the turtles came to eat. We had lunch, snorkeled, swam, and walked the beach. It was gorgeous.

The next morning, we had breakfast, took a quick swim and headed off to our next stop. Each day was about a two hour sail to the next destination.

We went to White Beach, Guana Island. Here we had lunch, used paddle boards, snorkeled, and walked the white beach. First shark sighting here.

We would get up, have breakfast, snorkel, and then move on to our next spot. Once we arrived we would have lunch and swim. The rides between islands were fun and usually spent up in the net. Our next day we went to The Bath’s. It is an island full of caves to climb and walk through. Big tourist destination so one of our busier spots.

The next day we went to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. We spent the day at the beach and at the world famous Soggy Dollar Bar. They were destroyed in hurricane Irma but was rebuilt with the help of a Go Fund Me page.

We stayed here over night. The water was crystal clear and weather was perfect. We had breakfast and then headed out to our next spot. We went to dock at Road Town. There was a bar at the top of the mountain that overlooked the BVI’s.

While here, the kids swam in the pool and Becky made them home-made cinnamon rolls. I may have said once or twice, “Don’t get use to this kids…” Needless to say..they miss Becky. Hell, we ALL miss Becky! We stayed the night and moved on in the morning. On the ride to the next spot we saw a dolphin!

The sunsets were gorgeous and photos cannot do it justice. Dinner was always around sunset and outside. Table set perfectly and we had a friend visit us who would just sit on the grill and hope we dropped something…

When it was time to head back to the Moorings we were all sad and planning our next trip. We stayed at the marina again overnight and the kids swam in the pool.

This was a trip of a lifetime and we cannot wait to go back! We will most definately request Becky and Rob again. They made the trip incredible and we consider them life-long friends. If anyone is considering doing a trip like this, give them a call. They are so friendly and informative. They will create a trip around your needs. Of course, tell them we sent you!
